How to Choose an RS485 Energy Meter for Industrial Applications

The right meter depends on the electrical system and the purpose of monitoring. Before selecting a product, users should confirm whether the application is single-phase or three-phase, the operating voltage and current, and whether direct connection or CT connection is required.

Communication requirements are equally important. The meter should support the required RS485 communication parameters and Modbus RTU register structure so that it can communicate correctly with the customer's PLC, SCADA or energy management system.

Measurement accuracy should also match the application. Basic energy monitoring may require a different accuracy level from applications involving energy billing, cost allocation or detailed energy analysis.

Installation method is another consideration. DIN-rail energy meters are commonly used in electrical distribution cabinets and control panels because they are compact and easy to integrate into existing installations.
