What Is a MID Three-Phase Energy Meter for EV Charging?
A MID three-phase energy meter is a certified electricity meter designed to accurately measure electrical energy in three-phase systems. In EV charging applications, it is commonly installed between the electrical supply and the charging equipment to measure the energy delivered to an electric vehicle.
For commercial and public charging infrastructure in Europe, accurate energy measurement is important when electricity consumption is used as the basis for customer billing. This is where a MID-certified meter can be more suitable than a standard energy monitoring meter.

Why Do EV Charging Stations Need a MID Meter?
An EV charger can use a standard three-phase energy meter to monitor power and energy consumption, but billing applications may require a meter with appropriate legal metrology compliance.
A MID-certified energy meter provides a higher level of suitability for applications where measured energy is used for commercial transactions. For an EV charging operator, the meter can record how many kilowatt-hours are delivered during a charging session, allowing the charging system to calculate the customer's energy cost.
For example, if an EV receives 32 kWh during a charging session, the energy meter provides the measured value that can be used by the charging system for billing.
How Is the Meter Connected to an EV Charger?
In a typical three-phase AC charging system, the meter is installed on the AC input side of the EV charger. It measures the electrical energy flowing to the charging equipment and communicates the measurement data to the charger controller.
A common architecture is:
Grid → MID Three-Phase Energy Meter → EV Charger → Electric Vehicle
With an RS485 interface and Modbus RTU communication, the charging controller can read parameters such as voltage, current, active power, power factor, and accumulated energy from the meter.
The meter therefore acts as the measurement component, while the EV charger and backend platform handle charging control, user management, and billing functions.
What Can a MID Energy Meter Measure?
A three-phase EV charging meter can typically measure active energy, voltage, current, power, frequency, and power factor. Depending on the meter design, it may also support import and export energy measurement, making it useful for systems with photovoltaic generation or bidirectional energy flows.
For EV charging applications, the most important measurement is usually active energy in kWh because it provides the basis for determining how much electricity has been delivered during a charging session.
MID Meter for EV Charging Billing
One of the main reasons European EV charging projects specify MID-certified meters is billing.
Public charging stations, workplace charging facilities, commercial parking areas, hotels, shopping centers, and fleet charging sites may need to determine charging costs based on actual energy consumption.
A MID energy meter can therefore be integrated into the charging system as the dedicated billing measurement device. The charging controller reads the meter data through a communication interface and uses the measured energy value as part of the charging transaction.
The exact legal and installation requirements depend on the country, charging application, and local metrology regulations, so project-specific compliance should always be confirmed before deployment.
MID Three-Phase Meter with RS485 and Modbus
RS485 with Modbus RTU is widely used for communication between energy meters and industrial control equipment. For EV charging stations, this allows the charger controller to obtain real-time electrical measurements without requiring the meter to provide its own cloud platform.
This architecture is particularly useful for charging equipment manufacturers and system integrators that already have their own charging management software or backend platform.
The energy meter focuses on accurate measurement, while the charging system manages communication, charging control, payment, and user services.
MID Meters for Commercial and Public EV Charging
MID three-phase energy meters can be used in various European EV charging scenarios, including public charging stations, commercial parking lots, office buildings, hotels, shopping centers, residential charging projects, and electric vehicle fleet depots.
They can also be combined with solar PV systems and energy management systems where the project needs to monitor grid consumption, solar generation, and EV charging demand.
Choosing a MID Three-Phase Meter for an EV Charger
When selecting a meter, EV charger manufacturers and system integrators should check the required voltage and current range, three-phase wiring configuration, accuracy class, MID certification, communication protocol, installation method, and whether bidirectional measurement is required.
For commercial charging projects, compatibility with the charging controller is also important. A meter with standard RS485 Modbus communication can simplify integration with existing charging hardware and energy management systems.
