1、What is a CT Meter?
A CT meter, or current transformer meter, is an electricity meter designed to measure electrical current indirectly through an external current transformer. Instead of passing the full load current through the meter, the CT reduces the primary current to a standardized secondary signal, typically 1A or 5A, which the meter can safely measure.
CT metering is commonly used for high-current commercial and industrial electrical systems where direct-connected metering is unsuitable.

2、How It Works?
A CT meter uses a current transformer to convert high primary current into a smaller secondary current (usually 5A or 1A), which the meter measures. This ensures safety while allowing high-current measurement.
For instance, a CT with a ratio of 200:1 steps down a primary current of 200 amperes to 1 amperes on the secondary side. The CT meter reads this reduced current and multiplies it by the ratio to display the actual current in the circuit. This setup allows accurate measurement without exposing the meter or operator to high current levels.
Example formula:
ActualCurrent=MeasuredCurrent×CTRatio
3、CT Meter vs Direct-Connected Meter
| Feature | CT Meter | Direct-Connected Meter |
| Current measurement | Through external CT | Direct current input |
| High-current applications | Excellent | Limited by meter rating |
| Installation | CT required | Simpler |
| Typical applications | Industrial, commercial | Residential, small commercial |
| High-current safety | CT provides isolation | Full load current passes through meter |
For higher-current electrical systems, a CT-operated meter can provide a safer and more practical metering solution. Direct-connected meters are generally more suitable for circuits within the meter's rated current range.
4、Key Features
High Safety
The meter does not directly contact high voltage, reducing the risk of electric shock.
Suitable for High Current
Can measure hundreds to thousands of amperes, suitable for industrial plants and distribution systems.
High Accuracy
Uses standard current transformers for stable and reliable measurements.
5、Applications
Industrial Energy Monitoring
Monitor electricity consumption of production lines, motors and large industrial equipment.
Commercial Buildings
Used for main incoming power monitoring and submetering in office buildings, shopping centers and commercial facilities.
Solar PV Systems
Measure grid import/export or AC-side energy consumption in larger PV installations.
EV Charging Infrastructure
Monitor high-current circuits supplying EV chargers and charging stations.
Energy Submetering
Use CT meters to measure individual departments, tenants, production lines or equipment.
