1、What is a CT Meter?

In modern power systems, electricity measurement is essential for households, businesses, and energy management. A CT meter (Current Transformer Meter) measures current and energy using a current transformer (CT). It is especially common in industrial and high-voltage distribution scenarios, where it provides safe and accurate monitoring of high currents.

2、How It Works?

A CT meter uses a current transformer to convert high primary current into a smaller secondary current (usually 5A or 1A), which the meter measures. This ensures safety while allowing high-current measurement.

For instance, a CT with a ratio of 200:1 steps down a primary current of 200 amperes to 1 amperes on the secondary side. The CT meter reads this reduced current and multiplies it by the ratio to display the actual current in the circuit. This setup allows accurate measurement without exposing the meter or operator to high current levels.

Example formula:

ActualCurrent=MeasuredCurrent×CTRatio

3、Key Features

    High Safety

The meter does not directly contact high voltage, reducing the risk of electric shock.

    Suitable for High Current

Can measure hundreds to thousands of amperes, suitable for industrial plants and distribution systems.

    High Accuracy

Uses standard current transformers for stable and reliable measurements.

4、Applications

Power monitoring in industrial plants

High-voltage distribution systems

Energy metering for large machinery

Smart grid and energy-saving management

5、Important Notes

Never open-circuit the CT secondary; it can generate high voltage, posing a safety risk.

The CT ratio must match the meter’s setting for accurate measurement.

With a CT meter, users can safely and accurately monitor high-current systems, achieving effective energy management and energy-saving goals. In industrial, commercial, and high-voltage distribution scenarios, CT meters are essential for reliable electricity measurement.
